10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The Artists' Beit Midrash 5777 Program:

Mazel Tov!  A Jewish Wedding...
Exploring, Expanding, Emerging Rituals

Through text study and discussion, we will take a close look at the ceremonies, objects, and spirituality, of Jewish weddings. We will examine, explore, and perhaps reinvent, some of our sacred rituals. We have paper cutters, calligraphers, printmakers, potters, poets, collagists, painters, writers, musicians. Artists working in any and all media, and at every skill level, are welcome. The only prerequisites are a love of text and art. Each participant will have the opportunity to react personally to the text, working in the art form of their choice, and to offer and receive responses to our work. At the end of the series, we will present our work to the community in a spring Shavuot exhibit.

About our instructors: Since 2004, the ABM has brought together artists working in different media and challenged them with the study of Talmud, Midrash, Tanakh, Halakhah and Jewish poetry. Harriet Finck and Miriam Stern serve as our art facilitators. They guide and critique us in ways that challenge what we are thinking and what we are making. Harriet Finck, originally trained as an architect, is a collagist whose work has been focused on two related ideas: putting the pieces of broken things together and finding form within chaos. Miriam Stern is a painter, printmaker, and installation artist, who has exhibited both in the United States and Israel, and has won numerous awards and prizes. Both Harriet and Miriam regularly work with the ABM. Rabbi Iscah Waldman teaches Talmud and Midrash at The Golda Och Academy, holds a BA in Talmud, an MA in Midrash, and was ordained from JTSA in 1999. This is her second time teaching in the ABM.
